Do I need an ERP or just project management software?

Project management software is enough if you only need tasks, files, and a schedule. You need an ERP when materials, inventory, shop status, shipping contents, and job cost have to stay in sync with that schedule. Facade shops usually hit that line earlier than they admit.

Key facts

PM tools do not allocate a sheet to a cutlist or receive a coil to a container.
If purchasing and the shop argue about quantities, you have an ERP problem, not a meeting problem.
Install percent-complete from memory is a PM workaround for missing product status.

How shops handle this

Count systems that hold quantity
Drawings, Excel BOM, PO, inventory, ship list, site. If the number is greater than one, PM software will not fix it.
Ask who owns “done”
If done means hung, a task list without barcodes will drift.
Price the hidden labour
Hours spent reconciling files are software costs you already pay.
Pilot one live project
Do not decide from a feature matrix. Decide from a crate that used to go missing.
