How to generate a BOM from Rhino
Rhino is where many architectural metal teams model one-off geometry. The failure mode is exporting a PDF and rebuilding quantities in Excel. Spectr integrates with Rhino so the BOM and scannable product records come from the design file.
Key facts
- Rhino is excellent at unique geometry. It is not an inventory or shipping system.
- Spectr lists Rhino among the design tools it imports from.
- Each product becomes a virtual twin that can be tracked after the model is done.
- Nesting and cutting still happen in shop tools — the ERP owns identity and status.
How shops handle this
- Stabilize the model for production
Level of detail has to match what the brake and the crate need, not only the render. - Generate the Spectr BOM from Rhino
Create product records instead of a side-car takeoff. - Attach approved materials
Panel system rules should block an unapproved skin or extrusion on the PO. - Hand the same IDs to the floor
If the shop invents its own mark scheme, you have two languages again.
Common questions
We model in Rhino and draft in AutoCAD. Which one wins?
The file of record for the issued set. Spectr should import that — not both with conflicting marks.
Does Spectr replace Grasshopper?
No. Computational design stays in your CAD stack. Spectr runs the job after design exists.
